âThere is still a long way to go towards the goal, and this underlines the great challenge that Danish society has set itself.â
Rasmus Helveg Petersen, the climate spokesperson for the Social Liberal party, told the Politiken newspaper that the report was a âmassive fail with a capital Fâ for the governmentâs climate efforts and âa wake-up callâ for every party in government to step up efforts.
But Denmarkâs climate minister, Dan Jørgensen, told the state broadcaster DR he welcomed the âgood advice and recommendationsâ and believed the government had been âbusyâ.
âObviously, we have less than 10 years to meet this goal, but fortunately weâve reached over a third of the way,â he said. âItâs been a pretty strong first year and a half, but we need to be at least as strong for the rest of the time.â
Danish MEP Morten Helveg Petersen has been selected as the European Parliament’s lead on drawing up an offshore wind strategy.
Petersen will work on the blueprint as Special Rapporteur to deliver on the bloc’s sector ambitions, which include a 300GW by 2050 target.
It is understood the strategy will be published later this year and will address a range of issues such as grid, planning and so-called hybrid projects.
In a post on Facebook, Helveg Petersen said it is no coincidence a Dane has been selected.
“Exactly 30 years ago this year, Denmark built the world s first offshore wind farm, Vindeby near Lolland. Therefore…Denmark is today a leader when it comes to utilizing the energy in the wind at sea, and that expertise must now be brought into play at EU level.”
