Lesufi warns schools not to defy government by operating now

Johannesburg - Gauteng private, public or independent schools that are operating are defying the government, says Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
This comes as the MEC said that new education protocols to delay school reopening by two weeks should be gazetted.
On Friday, Deputy Minister of Basic Education Reginah Mhaule announced that the calendar for schools had been revised. School management teams would report for duty on January 25, teachers on February 1 and pupils on February 15.
The reopening of schools was delayed by two weeks to monitor the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic. Private schools, which had started their 2021 academic year, were requested to shut down, too.
Helpmekaar College and Curro agree to delay reopening by two weeks after meeting Lesufi

Johannesburg â The head of Helpmekaar College and the chief executive of Curro schools have agreed to delay the reopening of the institution following a discussion with Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi.
Lesufi went to Helpmekaar on Monday after reports that the school had sent a communique to parents saying pupils should report back on January 18.
This was despite the Department of Basic Education (DBE) decision to postpone the re-opening of schools from January 27 to February 15 owing to concerns over rising Covid-19 infections in the province. Like all private schools in Gauteng, Helpmekaar and Curro had already started their academic year when the announcement was made.

NATIONAL NEWS - The Roodepoort wrestling community is mourning the loss of one of the greats of the sport.
Only 5 months after the passing of his life-long friend Danie Brits, Danie Voges has also passed away.
Voges has been described as a giant of a man – both in stature and character.
Voges, sometimes known as The Hulk, grew up in the suburb of Jan Hofmeyer, west of Johannesburg, and matriculated from Hoërskool Helpmekaar.
He was awarded Springbok colours for amateur wresting 12 times and Voges and Brits were known as The Fighting Springboks in professional wrestling circles.
