Greece’s Beloved Hydrofoil Fleet Set to Retire

Greece’s beloved hydrofoil vessels, better known in the country as ”flying dolphins,” will no longer be actively used by Hellenic Seaways.
The news was recently made public by the Hellenic Seaways company, which operates sea routes between Athens and the islands of the Saronic Gulf.
What is a Hydrofoil Vessel?
A hydrofoil vessel is a boat with a lifting surface, or foil, that operates atop water.
They are very similar to aerofoils used by airplanes. As a hydrofoil craft gains speed, the hydrofoils lift the boat’s hull out of the water, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds. This exact ability is what has made people in Greece know them by the nickname “flying dolphins.”
The
Attica Group, a leading coastal shipping company in Greece, has signed an agreement with the Brødrene Aa shipyard of Norway, for the construction of
three state-of-the-art Aero Catamaran vessels that will replace three of the group’s older technology vessels that serve the Saronic islands.
Budgeted at 21 million euros, the investment will be covered by own funds and bank financing. The construction of the new vessels will begin immediately after the signing of a loan agreement. Their delivery is expected to take place within the
first four months of 2022.
Boasting an ultra-modern design and innovative features, the new vessels are expected to significantly upgrade the travel experience for over 3 million passengers that travel annually on the Attica Group’s Saronic lines.
