Photo by Shahar Stroh 4/14/2021 The National Herald      LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture (UCLA SNF Center) has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Greece to support the Athens’ performance of Makriyannis Unplugged, a contemporary retelling of the life and memoirs of Yannis Makriyannis, who played an essential role in the 1821 Greek War of Independence. Written and performed by actor and director Yorgos Karamihos (The Durrells in Corfu; Fugitive Pieces; Like Chef, Like God), the play premieres at UCLA on November 7, 2021.

UCLA Hellenic Center Events Offer a Timely Focus on Jewish Greece

The National Herald      LOS ANGELES On March 1, Greece will assume the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. To mark this occasion, UCLA’s SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture is joining with other organizations in hosting a ten-day virtual event series, Heritage and Memory: A Focus on Jewish Greece. Events in the series include a conversation with Greece’s first Jewish mayor, the mayor of Ioannina, introduced by the Ambassador from Greece to the United States, a tour of the only Romaniote synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, and free film screenings from the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. The events, open to the public, run from January 27 to February 6.

On March 1, Greece will assume the Presidency of this intergovernmental organization, which unites governments and experts to promote, advance and shape Holocaust education, research and remembrance.
