smith noticed, very resolved and disciplined and not remotely panicking. what have you noticed? much the same thing. our helicopter crews reported that at three of the sites they visited no longer required assistance and that is a positive sign that the ground base relief is taking shape and meeting the needs of the people. it also an increased presence of japan ground defense force and heavy equipment starting to clear up the debris at the sites. by no means is this effort over. it is just getting started but this is encouraging signs that i like to see. neil: you guys are unsung hero in all of this and sometimes, to put it mildly very, very tough.
more on the breaking news situation. helicopter crews earlier today attempting to pour water on some of these spent fuel rods, fuel pods, unsuccessfully. it seems like only one helicopter was able to drop water. those helicopters manned by military personnel, japanese military personnel are also enroute with 11 water cannons to try to douse these rods with water from the ground. they feel that would be more effective. they ve only had a few water cannons, they had two given by the military previous to this. it s not clear how many they ve had other than that, or why they re just now sending in 11 water cannons. it is a very fluid situation on the ground. from america today, from america s top nuclear regulator, we heard that the situation could be a lot more dire than japanese authorities are saying. given that assessment, the workers on the premises at that plant, some 180 workers now being rotated through, those workers could be in even more
kiran. we learned the u.s. military has given the japanese two water trucks to help try to cool that reactor that stan was just reporting on from what we have been told from u.s. military sources, they trained a few of the japanese workers at a u.s. base near tokyo and now those workers have taken the trucks and are heading to that fukushima nuclear plant. take a look at a mapout and show you a little bit about what the u.s. is doing to protect its own personnel. a lot of the ships have now moved further offshore and further north to get away from that downwind radioactive plume. but helicopter crews are still flying relief supplies and search and rescue missions near the nuclear plant. the helicopter crews are being told to keep their sleeves rolled down and keep the compartments closed off as much as. some of the air crew are now giving potassium iodide tablets to ward off any effects of radiation. not too much worry in this area
