Following that decision a local climate group – Hauraki Climate Action – took the council to court and forced it to make a climate change plan before declining signing the declaration. With the council’s plan now nearing completion and the second vote a few weeks away, Mayer said it’s perfect timing to put the “pressure on them to reconsider signing it”. “We just want to put our voices out there to show them that there’s community support for them to take climate action,” Mayer, 17, said.
