Kevin Maxwell: ‘My MBE is a win in the fight against racism’ Nadine White Kevin Maxwell - Micha Theiner Former Metropolitan Police officer Kevin Maxwell has said his MBE, awarded in acknowledgement of his memoir detailing racism in the force, is a significant step in the struggle towards equality in Britain. The author, a Black gay man, was among those named on the Queen’s Honours List on Friday for services to diversity through literature following his best-selling book Forced Out. In 2012, Mr Maxwell won a discrimination case against Scotland Yard after an employment tribunal found he had been subjected to direct discrimination, harassment and victimisation during his ten years of working within the force. He left following the hearing’s outcome.

The Guardian commemorates 200th anniversary with Manchester plaque

by Charlie Spargo The Guardian has marked its 200th year and celebrated its Manchester heritage with a new commemorative plaque, pictured, at the site of its former offices. The plaque was unveiled today (May 11th) at 3 Cross Street, as part of the wider celebrations being hosted by the publication, which was originally launched as the Manchester Guardian on May 5th, 1821. The office was the home of The Guardian between 1841 and 1970, and was where its longest-serving editor, CP Scott, worked for nearly 50 years - writing his notable centenary essay a century ago featuring the famous phrase, Comment is free, but facts are sacred.

The Guardian has announced the first event in its 200th anniversary programme - a Guardian Live event ‘Guardian at 200: Made in Manchester’, celebrating Manchester’s vibrant and radical history, where it was founded in 1821.
