North-east intensive care staff tell of fear of infecting family and friends

© NHS Grampian Lee Allen and Helen Paddon work in critical care at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Medics working on the front line of the fight against Covid-19 in the north-east have told how they feared infecting their family and friends. Consultant Lee Allen and nurse manager Helen Paddon both work in critical care at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and have treated the sickest patients for the last 12 months. In the initial stages of the pandemic, before lockdown measures were introduced and little was known about the disease, staff were fearful – not for themselves, but for their loved ones. However, measures put in place to control the spread put their minds at ease.

Misinformation on Covid 'really detrimental' as north-east intensive care staff vent anger

© PA Misinformation around coronavirus has been slammed by those working on the front line. Frontline NHS staff who have spent nearly a year treating the north-east’s sickest Covid-19 patients say they are “angry” over the spread of false information about the disease. Consultant Lee Allen and nurse manager Helen Paddon work in critical care at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where only the most severely ill patients are treated for the virus. Since the pandemic took hold early last year, they and other workers have seen first-hand the damage coronavirus can do. On some occasions, they have treated their own colleagues, and the number of people in hospital during January rose to nearly 150% of last spring’s peak.
