German football fans should fill Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena to properly commemorate the life of Germany great Franz Beckenbauer, who died aged 78 on Sunday, former team mate and ex-Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Tuesday. Beckenbauer, who was Germany's first truly global sports star and led them to the World Cup title as player and coach in 1974 and 1990 respectively, had become part of the country's social fabric in a hugely successful career on and off the pitch spanning over 50 years.
The German Football Federation (DFB) has said it will seek talks with the family of Franz Beckenbauer and his club Bayern Munich on how to honour the nation's football icon who died on Sunday at age 78. A DFB spokesman said that the talks would come after an initial period of mourning. The state of Bavaria has announced a book of condolence for German football legend Franz Beckenbauer whose club Bayern Munich will illuminate their stadium in his honour. State chancellery head Florian Herrmann said after a cabinet meeting that prime minister Markus Söder and Bayern Munich representatives would be the first to sign the book on Wednesday, with members of the public then welcome to follow.
