Town chooses to opt out on marijuana law (Credit: Courtesy photo)
The Town Board wants to opt out of that part of the new state law that would allow marijuana dispensaries or cafes where it could be purchased and/or used. But it still must allow marijuana to be smoked. However, it can ban smoking any substance in certain places. As of Tuesday’s Town Board work session, the plan called for banning smoking at either of the town beaches Crescent or Wades.
Before it can act, a public hearing must be held and is scheduled for the regular meeting on Friday, May 7.

North Ferry is applying to the Suffolk County Legislature for permission for some rate increases, while South Ferry has no immediate plans to do so.
On May 11, there will be a hearing on North Ferry’s request, which can be accessed via Zoom. North Ferry officials will be asking for increases, according to Stella Lagudis, executive director of the Heights Property Owners Corporation (HPOC), which owns North Ferry.
Residents who get discounted tickets would see a $1 increase each way, while those who pay full fares would have to pay an additional $2 each way.

Town preps for federal coronavirus relief funds and assistance (Reporter file photo)
The Shelter Island Town Board took a first step Friday toward obtaining funds from the federal Corona Virus Relief Program, moving quickly to set in motion its application.
It’s currently unknown what money might be available to the town for expenses incurred in conjunction with services it’s had to implement to deal with the pandemic. But it’s assumed that when the town learns specifics about what money it might receive, there would be a short period in which to apply. Rather than wait for more details, it’s authorized Supervisor Gerry Siller to apply for and accept any federal grants or assistance.
