The Vet Emergency Jason E. Kaplan The pandemic worsened working conditions for veterinarians, who have been pushed to the brink with increased workloads. But COVID-19 is also forcing employers to address the mental-health crisis afflicting the profession. If you take your pet to DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital, Oregon’s largest veterinary hospital, you may be in for quite a wait. The Portland ER for animals open 24 hours a day, seven days a week has been inundated with visits over the past 10 months. The time it takes for pets to be seen has gone up by as much as 24 hours. Pre-pandemic, the hospital aimed to prevent wait times from going above one hour.

President’s Award Raina Dey, Newberg, and Jenny Wood, Dallas, won this award, given to an individual or group who has made an exceptional contribution to the OVMA and to veterinary medicine. Dey serves as public relations director for the OVMA. In her role, she facilitates outreach and education about the profession and the importance of veterinary care for all animals. Earlier, Dey worked in the Continuing Legal Education department at the Oregon State Bar. Wood serves as an executive assistant at the OVMA. She handles membership services and is part of the team that manages the Oregon Veterinary Conference. Earlier, Wood worked in the business office at the Oregon State University Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

She graduated with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from Washington State University’s veterinary school in 1992. She also is the director of the Northwest Veterinary Specialists Critical Care Food Bank. Dr. Doug Koekkoek was hired as chief physician executive at PeaceHealth. His goal is to help unify physicians and clinical care practices across the health system. Koekkoek was most recently employed as the system chief medical officer at Providence Health and Services’s Physician Enterprise, which encompasses more than 900 clinics and 9,000 physicians.
