Livonia police chief: Adding social workers does not defund the police

Livonia Police Chief Curtis Caid is optimistic of what embedding two social workers into the department would mean. I am confident this is going to be a great program for our community, he said.  I think this will also be a program others will seek out for their community. Caid says he s been working to add mental health and crisis experts to the Livonia Police Department, a program now proposed through a partnership with Hegira Health, for years and he hopes to see that idea come to fruition. The social workers would co-respond with officers to crisis situations, respond alone in secure situations and follow-up with those who need it.

COVID-19 takes dark toll on substance use disorder

COVID-19 takes dark toll on substance use disorder Ashley Zlatopolsky The pandemic has taken a financial, emotional and social toll on Americans. But the psychological toll of COVID-19 is one of the most alarming as we approach nearly a year of social distancing, job loss and stress about the health and safety of loved ones. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported EMS responses for ‘probable’ opioid overdoses during April-August 2020 were 22.4% higher than during April-August 2019.  Isolation and a COVID-19 surge are big contributors, along with limited resources due to facilities being shut down or at partial capacity to follow social distancing guidelines.
