Funded by Islamic forces, militant outfits Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami wanted to turn Bangladesh into a Taliban state like Afghanistan if they came to power, top Hefazat leaders, including Mamunul Haque who was arrested recently, have confessed to the police.
A top detective official said that Hefajat leaders had formed an organisation called Rabetatul Waizin Bangladesh with leaders from across the country.
They used to control Waz Mahfils (spreading militancy in the name of preaching Islam) by forcing organisers from Pakistan to invite their militant leaders as speakers in them.

Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh took the decision in a meeting on Sunday at Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Madania madrasa in Dhaka’s Jatrabari.
The board’s Office Secretary Asiour Rahman announced the decision in a statement, saying the meeting was held to create “a proper atmosphere for continuing religious activities and saving the education system by keeping the standards of the Alems”.
The board’s Chairman Mahmudul Hasan presided over the meeting.

As many as 551 Alems of Ahle Sunnat raised the demand in a statement issued by their Chairman Shaikhul Hadith Quazi Muhammad Muinuddin Ashrafi and Secretary General Syed Mosihuddaula on Saturday.
“Islam never supports engaging in socially immoral activities, causing loss of lives and damage to public properties in the name of Islam. The country, Millat and Mazhab are never safe in the hands of individuals or organisations that carry out such violent activities,” the statement said.
