Hungarian Golden Hopes: Could Tokyo Be Judoka Karakas s Big Shot?

After having finished in the top eight (5th and 7th) at the two previous Olympics, and winning the European Championship last year, Tokyo could be Judoka Hedvig Karakas’s big shot at a top medal. Here is Hungary Today’s series introducing those Hungarian athletes who could be in for gold in Japan. The 31-year-old athlete, who will compete in the 57 kg category, dubbed herself ‘the bronze girl,’ as she previously won a World Championship and two European Championship bronze medals, while at the London Olympics in 2012 she lost the bronze final. Well, this was so until last year when she finally reached the highest rank of the podium at the European Championships. That gold opened another door for her, as subsequently, she was also elected Hungary’s Athlete of the Year for 2020.

Football Prodigy Szoboszlai and Judoka Karakas are Hungary s Athletes of the Year

Dominik Szoboszlai and Hedvig Karakas are Hungary’s Athletes of the Year for 2020. The annual Gala took place on Monday at the national theatre in Budapest, reports sports daily Nemzeti Sport.  The gala featured a number of categories for individual athletes, teams, coaches, and most exciting sporting moments. This year was unique, with no live audience due to the pandemic, viewers instead tuned in online and on their televisions. The men’s category gained particular attention this year. Hungarians have been at the edges of their seats for weeks now, wondering which among the top three athletes will receive the prestigious award. The two other individuals who Dominik was in competition with were Márton Fucsovics and Szoboszlai’s teammate Péter Gulácsi, winning second and third place respectively. Szoboszlai was difficult to beat at 563 points, but Fucsovics’ score of 364 was only 15 points ahead of Gulácsi’s 349.
