Going ‘over the sea to Skye’ has improved a great deal since the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie. It is just one of the Scottish islands served by a flotilla of cruise boats – none carrying more than 12 passengers – whose crew will pamper you as you explore the rugged landscape and tranquil bays. And with restrictions on cruise ships calling at English ports due to relax on May 17, eyes are on the Scottish Government in the hopes of similar easing. When that happens make sure to book quickly – cruises can sell out a year in advance.
