The Navy is advancing its efforts to enhance its underwater fleet by acquiring new heavy-weight torpedoes, with the defense ministry contemplating a proposal to purchase a limited quantity from a foreign supplier while also approving a Make in India initiative for a larger requirement. According to sources, the proposal for procuring Heavy Weight Torpedoes (HWT) is slated to be deliberated upon by the ministry soon. The plan involves the direct procurement of 48 torpedoes, along with discussions on an indigenous development path for a considerably larger quantity.
