we do still have pretty strong wind gusts along the coastline, 40, 50, even 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts still being felt at this hour. the rain bands are still there. there is still the potential for some of these bands as they move onshore to perhaps have some rotation with them, so it s not out of the question to still perhaps have the tornado threat for the next few hours as well. we had over 20 tornado reports in just the last 48 hours. another big threat is still the ongoing flooding. you ve got flash flood warnings and watches for numerous states because of those heavy rain bands. the good news is the majority, the bulk of the rain is finally starting to come to an end. but look at some of the total numbers. portions of north and south carolina picking up over 10 inches of rain. wilmington, north carolina, picking up over 9 inches of rain. yesterday they actually broke a daily rainfall record. there is still more on the way, but most areas are likely to pick up an additional 1 to
you can see those heavy rain bands coming all the way into the peninsula. we do have hurricane warnings still now right along the north carolina shore line. hurricane tropical storm warnings from norfolk to ocean city. tropical storm warnings for the eastern end of massachusetts. then we get up into canada and we still have tropical storm watches. really the big problem right now as you saw in katie beck s live shot, the rain. we have flash flood warnings stretching from kill devil hills up to norfolk and back, up and down the peninsula to right around cape hatteras. inland a bit, into north carolina. we have had actual verification of a storm surge up around norfolk of seven feet in two hours. so this verifies between four to seven feet of a storm surge.
charleston and the harbor, trying to push that water back offshore, so that s good news. however, 5 to 8 feet storm surge still very possible and will occur. the eye seems to be collapsing somewhat. it s not going to change the category. it s still a category 2. but even that doesn t matter much, because the winds continue to broaden out. the hurricane force winds are now outward 60 miles. the tropical storm force winds are out to 195. it can still be broader than that. it s going to move up the chain. the warnings are in effect from hurricane warnings up toward norfolk. and of course in your area are tropical storm warnings. but it s the tornadoes, you showed video earlier. typically, we ll see little spinups with our feeder bans that are ef-1, ef-2. those are massively large tornadoes. it s the heavy rain bands to the north and the core moving in that s going to cause some pretty good flooding into the carolinas. watch out, cape fear. watch out, cape lookout. this is not over with an
the movement itself is north, northeast at 8 miles per hour. here s the thing. it s very possible we could see a landfall today in south carolina or maybe perhaps it slides ever so close to the coast and makes a landfall tomorrow in north carolina. this is how close we re talking. that this storm is going to get. regardless of whether it makes landfall technically or not, the impacts are already there. obviously, you re looking at very heavy rain bands. one of the growing concerns is actually the threat for tornadoes. this is a tornado watch in effect for portions of north and south carolina. this includes cities like myrtle beach, wilmington, kill devil hills. this goes through the afternoon hours. we ve had over a dozen tornado warnings this morning. three are active at this point. two in north carolina, one in south carolina. just to the north of myrtle beach. that s because of the strong outer bands, just starting to push on shore, are bringing with them waterspouts and even tornad
warnings up for the east coast of florida. the center of it and the eye, what s left of the eye, should be about 50 to about 70 miles off the coast. so we are not expecting hurricane, you know, sustained winds on the coast, but we could get some gusts possible. i think it s more likely just a tropical storm, but they do have the hurricane warning up there just in case, they are still nervous in case there is any unexpected wobbles towards florida that would quickly bring in much worse conditions. better safe an sorry. hurricane watches have been extended all the way up to almost myrtle beach and these will likely have to go over to warnings as we go throughout later today into tomorrow. overnight our computers, we watch these things, what you are looking at here is the depiction of the rain, the heavier the rain showed in the red, so that would be the area around the eye and that s the center of the storm there. it s off the coast. there s savannah, brunswick is right here and the char
