Pharmacist Joan Broussard closed her eyes and inhaled sharply as the needle pierced her left arm, but quickly recovered when Meshoca Williams asked her how she was doing.
âIâm fabulous,â Broussard said as Williams, a licensed practical nurse, pushed down on the plunger, injecting her with one of the first doses of the coronavirus vaccine administered in Baton Rouge.
Broussard then danced back and forth, holding up a card certifying her vaccination against the virus that causes COVID-19, blamed for the deaths of 504 people in the East Baton Rouge Parish.
âI just got chills thinking about it,â Broussard said Tuesday, just prior to receiving her shot. âToday is one of the days that has kept me going since March, whenever they noted the first confirmed case of COVID in the state of Louisiana. Baton Rouge hospitals shipment of first doses of COVID-19 vaccine delayed By Austin Kemker | December 14, 2020 at 4:42 PM CST - Updated December 15 at 9:48 AM
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Healthcare workers at Ochsner Medical Center in the Baton Rouge area will get vaccinated with the Pfizer-manufactured COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday.
Ochsner’s Baton Rouge facility was supposed to receive the first doses Monday, Dec. 14 but those doses have been delayed due to some shipping issues.
According to the hospital system, it did not receive the expected number of doses, but could not explain why.
A representative with the Ochsner Hospital System says it was just a kink in a very brand-new system that has already been worked out. The first doses in Baton Rouge are now expected to arrive Tuesday morning.
Vaccine Arrives in Louisiana
The first Pfizer COVID vaccines arrived in Louisiana Sunday and many will be administered to frontline healthcare workers across the state Monday.
Ochsner received 9,375 of the first wave of doses. Pharmacy Director Heather Maturin said the vials must be kept very cold to remain effective, so they’re being kept in deep freezers across the state until the time comes to move them to a facility for vaccinations. She said they’ve had to build a tightly coordinated schedule of vaccination so that no dose is wasted, or left out of the deep freezer for long.
