and bill weir in new york city, this is nightline, september 7th, 2011. good evening, i m cynthia mcfadden. and we begin tonight with a shooting spree in yet another american city. with the release of audio tapes of desperate 911 calls, a sifd picture of what happened inside a nevada ihop restaurant yesterday is now emerging. the picture outside the restaurant is coming into focus, too. neighbors shocked at the holes the bullets left, shaking their heads, asking, why now and why here? abc s david wright is in carson city, nevada. 911. what s the address of your emergency. it s ihop. there s a shooting going on. shooting where? in the ihop. reporter: it s been a long time since carson city, nevada, was considered the wild west. ryan, move! he s shooting at us now. okay, all right. he s shooting at us. automatic weapons. automatic weapons, like long weapons? there s one guy with an automatic weapon. he s shooting everybody. reporter: but the scene at the
and also michelle s family, as well. reporter: patty says she s known the family for 21 years and is in shock that the young girl she s seen grow up is facing murder charges. they re very nice people, and this is going to be quite a hard thing for them to deal with. i can t even imagine what they must be going through. reporter: police were seen taking evidence from her condo in union city hours after she was arrested for murder wednesday morning. it s been almost 12 weeks and police say even though they have le s dna evidence on a sneaker, and video surveillance of her in the parking lot where le was last seen, police wanted to be sure before they made an arrest. we did not want to rush to judgment or fail to turn over every possible piece of evidence. reporter: and we found out that the evidence was compelling. cell phone records and cell tower activations show that michelle s phone and estobon s. reporter: then there s the matter of a motive. her ex-boyfriend
in high school. good evening, i m julie haener. i m frank summerville. in one has found a body, but hayward police do have a person of interest under arrest for woman. reporter: frank, hayward police are telling us, that security camera video from this kaiser parking garage was a key piece of evidence in the arrest of a murder suspect today. police arrested giselle esteban for murder at her union city home this afternoon. she is a childhood friend of le s, and both attended the same high school. police say le was last seen going to her car in a kaiser garage. security camera footage reveals that esteban was present, both before and after michelle s disappearance. m i c helle s dna was found on one of the shoes at esteban s home. reporter: they do not have a body, cause of death, or a motive. also, esteban once told a news station, she blamed le for breaking up a relationship with a boyfriend. our primary concern, was, is, and always will be to find michelle, and b
home every day until we have her with our family again. [ crying ] reporter: evidence leading to esteban s he rest for murder blood stains located inside michelle s car. security camera footage at the kaiser hospital. physical evidence identifying esteban as having been inside michelle s car. also cell phone records showing michelle s phone and esteban s phone traveling on similar path. and a search warrant served at esteban s home among the items recovered a pair of shoes, michelle s dna found on one of esteban s running shoes. i can tell you if nothing else pans out, that it may be only esteban that can tell us where michelle is. that is the other piece of this investigation that we don t have right now. reporter: in addition to police launching searches, the fbi was called in and le s family organized many searches with hundreds of community volunteers. just want to hear her voice.
