the committee may be flexing its oversight power to illuminate what happened on january 6th. but the d.o.j. is apparently investigating the president himself. key aides to mike pence and his lead counsel have already testified in front of a federal grand jury. pretty high up. they asked hours and hours of detailed questions about meetings that trump himself led, one that was described to the january 6th committee. remember this? mr. eastman came in. he said i m here to request that you reject the electorate. i said we would lose 9-0 in the supreme court, wouldn t we? he started, well, i think you would only lose 7-2 and after further discussion acknowledged, yeah, you re right, we would lose 9-0. 6-2, 6-1, half dozen of another. as for jacob s credibility, keep in mind his version of events was already shown in front of a federal judge and that judge s conclusions, it is, quote, more likely than not that president trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the joint session of
the justice department goes public as the january 6th committee goes dark. i think that the hearings did an extremely good job of reminding us how important that day was. today congressman adam schiff and claire mccaskill on the merrick garland interview a new reporting that the dark department of is investigating donald trump. plus as pence for president essentially kicks off, can you really agree to disagree after a violent coup attempt? i don t know that the president and i differ on the issues. but we may differ on focus. and new reporting on the fake electoral campaign up on democracy in the republican running for governor who s in the middle of it all. all in starts right now. good evening from new york and chris says. in the past hour we just got a huge bit of breaking news. the department of justice is investigating donald trump. washington post is reporting that the doj is investigating the ex presidents actions as part of its criminal probe on january 6th.
we ll get the details from carole lending one of the reporters who broke that story an expert legal guidance on what it all means. but first, let s remember how we got here. today washington for only the second time a federal judge sentence a january 6th rioter to more than five years in prison. 63 months, it is tied for the longest sentence ever imposed on a participant in the capitol attack. and it s not hard to see. why in screenshots take it from officers body cams in january six, the sky is seen swinging a pull out of police officers so hard it snaps into on the officers riot shield. so the new guy finds another pull and start swinging that one at officers. the officer he hit with the first poll, the one he hit so hard that it stepped into, that was capitol police sergeant alkaline o connell. he gave emotional testimony about the horror that day before the january six investigation. today he sent his at that rioters hearing, saying he suffered mental and physical inju
so, take a look at his net favorability rating. that s his favorable minus unfavorable and look at it since essentially march. we see march 25th, which was essentially four months ago, it was minus six points. then it s minus seven points april 25th. may 25th, minus nine points. june 25th, minus 10 points. july 25th, minus 13 points. you don t have to be a mathematician to know that s a bad trend line. and it follows everything that we know that we ve seen in the past. when the president stays out of the news the former president stays out of the news, his numbers go up. when he gets in the news, the numbers go down. to me it s a clear trend line. what are you seeing among republicans in particular. if you look among republicans in particular, obviously the thing i think most republicans are concerned about at this point, specifically donald trump is most concerned about is whether or not he can win in 2024, right? can he win that republican nomination? and of course hi
