CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Samaritanâs Purse said they will be closing a temporary emergency COVID-19 field hospital recently opened in Lenoir.
The 30-bed hospital, which was constructed in the parking lot of the Caldwell Memorial Hospital and built in just seven days, opened on Jan. 7. Itâs aim was to provide regional COVID-19 care support for those living in western North Carolina.

Cases and hospitalizations are improving so much that a field hospital in Lenoir is getting ready to close.
Samaritan’s Purse opened the 30-bed field hospital outside of Caldwell Memorial because of high community spread, but the county health department said things are finally starting to turn around.

Wednesday Morning COVID-19 Update
80 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Catawba County Tuesday (January 19) lifting the total to 14,171, with 210 deaths. 108 people were hospitalized with the virus in Catawba County.
Two coronavirus-associated deaths were reported Tuesday in Burke County, raising the total to 105. Both of the individuals were in the their 70s and were not hospitalized. 45 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Burke County, increasing the total to 7,976. 29 people were hospitalized with the virus.
Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge is in the process of scheduling those aged 65+ for community clinics but can only schedule weekly based on the amount of vaccine determined to receive so it will take a while to vaccinate this group based on receiving limited supplies of the vaccine and the large demand expressed among residents.
