Delta Variant Drives Washington State COVID-19 Increase

Aug 4, 2021 The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is concerned about a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations being seen across the state due to the spread of the delta variant. Over the past four days, an average of 1,500 new cases have been reported each day. Hospital occupancy is at the highest levels seen to date in 2021 due to increased COVID-19 transmission, patient demand, and hospital staffing challenges. Today’s data dashboard update will reflect the following increases: Cases: 6,000 new cases will be reported today following a backlog from July 30. Testing: Percent positivity is climbing rapidly to 5.5%, up from a low of 2% a month ago.

(AP) More than 94% of Washington’s recent COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations have been among not fully vaccinated people, according to a new report from the state Department of Health. The data released Wednesday shows that between February and June, residents 12 and older who weren’t fully vaccinated made up about 97% of COVID-19 cases, 96% of hospitalizations and 94% of deaths in the state, The Seattle Times reported. The report “underscores once again the need for people to get vaccinated now, if they haven’t already,” health officials said in a news release.

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has released new data showing how COVID-19 is affecting the unvaccinated. “The new data shows that between February and June 2021, at least 94% of COVID-19 cases, deaths, and hospitalizations in individuals 12 years or older from Washington state occurred in those who were not fully vaccinated,” DOH said in a news release. Most people in Washington who died of COVID-19 in that time frame were unvaccinated. DOH: “We urge those who are eligible to get vaccinated. If they still have questions, we encourage them to speak to their healthcare provider,” said Secretary of Health Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH. “We all have a role to protect our community especially those who are most vulnerable.”
