The implementation of the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde [SUS]) was
a milestone for Brazil. Nearly four decades after the 8th National Health Conference
declared that health is a universal right and a governmental responsibility, as enshrined
in Brazil s 1988 Federal Constitution, the SUS is the best way to address Brazil s
health needs, protect the country against health emergencies, and allocate resources
to better serve the most deprived and marginalised populations.1 However, after major
setbacks to health and equity under the far-right wing administration of former President
Jair Bolsonaro,2 rebuilding the SUS must be a priority of the new Government of Brazil
under the leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
