The space sector has taken off as Oxfordshire’s Harwell Space Cluster and the Oxford to Cambridge Arc have helped drive growth in the space sector in the region. According to a report from ‘Size and Health of the UK Space Industry’ the number of space-related organisations in the South East has grown by 25 per cent, from 368 to 460, with 325 of them having their head quarters in the area, up from 269. The number of people in the region employed in the space sector has gone from 9,023 to 10,475 – an increase of 16 per cent. Science Minister Amanda Solloway said: “Oxford is renowned worldwide as a centre of excellence in space – and the sector is at the heart of the government’s plan for jobs and growth.
THE UK s space sector has seen rocketing growth in jobs and income according to a report. The findings come from the Size and Health of the UK Space Industry paper, commissioned by the UK Space Agency. Statistics show income has risen to £16.4bn in 2018-19, from £15.6bn in 2016-17. Employment has increased by 3,200 from 41,900 to 45,100. Research and development investment now sits at £702m, up 18 per cent. UK organisations involved in space activity has increased from 948 to 1,218. Science minister Amanda Solloway said: The UK space industry is booming.

In what will be the world’s first commercial servicing of its kind, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), Inmarsat and MDA UK are among those who won contracts with the European Space Agency (ESA), worth just over £2 million in total, to shape the infrastructure for future lunar exploration.
NASA plans to return to the Moon by 2024 and, working with ESA and other partners, intends to put a Gateway with living quarters for astronauts in lunar orbit. Reliable navigation and telecommunication capabilities are essential for these missions, and others like it, to succeed.
