LISBON. Portugal is preparing to shut all kindergartens, schools and universities from Friday to tackle a steep rise in coronavirus cases,

Publico newspaper said on Thursday.
The country managed to keep the number of coronavirus cases under control last year but now has the world s highest rolling average of new cases and deaths per million inhabitants over the last seven days, according to data tracker ourworldindata.org.
A government spokeswoman said the cabinet was discussing possible new measures to tackle the pandemic but declined to give details.
Overwhelmed by record numbers of COVID-19 patients, Portuguese hospital doctors spoke on Thursday of exhaustion and despair, as the government sought to slow contagion rates by ordering all schools to close for 15 days from Friday.
