Public Health Minister Mairi Gougeon has announced the Scottish Government s updated Covid testing strategy THE SCOTTISH Government will upgrade its Covid testing capacity to 250,000 each day despite warnings that less than one third of available tests are currently being used. Ministers have published their updating testing strategy – including targeted community testing, with 20 local authorities across eight health boards areas already signed up to the policy. Officials have pointed to 28 asymptomatic test sites now open across Scotland along with 12 dedicated mobile testing units – with more locations expected to be announced soon. Public Health Minister Mairi Gougeon told MSPs that by the end of March, “daily testing capacity across the entire system will be at least 250,000 tests per day”.

Public Health Minister Mairi Gougeon has today published an updated testing strategy for Scotland, setting out how testing will support the easing of restrictions and a return to everyday activities.
It includes a £13 million investment in 2021/22 to establish Scotland’s own genomic sequencing service to track new coronavirus (COVID-19) variants, and manage future outbreaks.
Capable of identifying the genetic origins of up 1000 cases a day when fully built, the service will support Scotland’s preparedness for any future pandemics, as well as other threats such as antibiotic resistance.
