On Friday, the WHO designated the new coronavirus variant B.1.1529 as a 'variant of concern' and named it Omicron. After countries rushed to impose travel bans to contain its spread, South Africa called the new restrictions 'unjustified'.
Effective immediately, the government will ban non-citizens who have been in those countries from entering and will require supervised 14-day quarantines for Australian citizens and their dependents returning from the countries.
