The BirthPlace at Spectrum Health Lakeland Niles Hospital welcomed Southwest Michigan’s first baby of 2021 at 3:03 a.m. on Friday, January 1. Tiffany and Timothy Brand of Buchanan, Michigan are the proud new parents of a daughter, Raven Sierra Brand. Baby Brand weighed in at seven pounds, 15 ounces, and measured 20 inches long. In keeping with the annual tradition, the family received gift baskets from the Spectrum Health Lakeland Auxiliary and an anonymous community donor.
ST. JOSEPH â A lot of planning and coordination went into that first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine in Berrien County.
Various officials, including those with Spectrum Health Lakeland and Berrien County Health Department (BCHD), have been meeting for months to coordinate the rollout alongside the mass vaccination plans that were already in place.
âThis partnership is really crucial when you consider this is really an unprecedented vaccination effort,â said Dr. John Froggatt, vice president of medical affairs, medical director of infection prevention, and medical director of the hospitalist programs at Spectrum Health Lakeland.
Froggatt, an infectious disease specialist, said weâve never had to do anything quite like this so quickly in our country, especially considering the fact a second dose of the vaccine will be needed.

Spectrum Health Lakeland has begun vaccinating some staff against COVID-19. Spectrum Health Lakeland has released the following:
Spectrum Health Lakeland received its first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine and began administering it on Wednesday, December 16. Vaccination will take place in a phased approach, with health care personnel and long-term care facility residents receiving the vaccine first. Additional doses are expected to be delivered in the coming days along with regular shipments over the next several months as determined by the State of Michigan.
“The vaccine is an exciting first step in saving lives and stemming the spread of COVID-19 in our communities,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, president, Spectrum Health Lakeland. “We are hopeful and optimistic this represents a new path toward controlling the pandemic.”
