Eddy County State Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R-55) termed the 2020 New Mexico Legislative Session as unproductive for working families in New Mexico.
She offered the Eddy County Board of County Commissioners a summary on Tuesday of what lawmakers accomplished - and failed to accomplish - in Santa Fe.
“It was more directed at special interests. We did do some good things in my opinion. We were able to defeat tax increases. There was a tidal wave of tax increases coming at New Mexicans. Thankfully, the Senate was able to put the brakes on a lot of that,” she said.
Brown said the New Mexico House of Representatives passed House Bill 122 (HB-122), the Health Insurance Premium Surtax which could have increased taxes on health insurance policies. The bill ultimately failed when the Senate Finance Committee declined to take action on it. The bill would have created a healthcare affordability fund for lower-income New Mexicans who purchased policies through the health insurance exchan
