NC Medicaid Managed Care enrollment opens - State of Reform

NC Medicaid Managed Care enrollment opens Shawna De La Rosa | Mar 16, 2021 Share this: The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) opened enrollment for NC Medicaid Managed Care Monday. The new plans will go into effect July 1. About 1.6 million of the 2.4 million Medicaid recipients will be eligible for the new choice-driven program.     The General Assembly opted to transition to managed care five years ago after fluctuating costs made it difficult to budget. Care will be managed by primary care providers, who will also coordinate mental and behavioral therapy for patients. The new program will also allow for patient choice, Dr. Mandy K. Cohen, NCDHHS secretary, said.

Here s How NC Medicaid Transformation Could Affect Recipients

If you get your health coverage through Medicaid, your care is about to change. On July 1, management of most of the program will be transferred to a handful of private companies. And starting Monday, 1.6 million North Carolinians can start to choose their plan. The General Assembly mandated the transition to managed care five years ago, after large fluctuations in program costs frustrated their efforts to budget. Managed care companies will have to eat any overruns, but if they can save money they get to keep some of the funds they don’t spend Dave Richard, who heads North Carolina s Medicaid program, said, “The financial side of it is that managed care gives you cost predictability. But we wanted to take the change to improve the health of North Carolina citizens.”
