UK coronavirus strain has spread to Karachi, Azra Pechuho warns

The UK variant of coronavirus, believed to be far more contagious than the original strain of the virus, has now spread to Karachi, Sindh s Minister for Health Dr Azra Pechuho said on Wednesday.
The health minister, in a video message on Twitter, said: Samples tested during the genomic studies we carried out, revealed 50% of the cases to have the UK variant, she said.
Pechuho said that the UK coronavirus variant spreads very fast and after having already spread in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, leading to the deaths and infections of numerous people, it has now reached Karachi.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday rejected the Sindh government s recommendation to impose a complete lockdown across the country for two weeks as he said that limited business activities would continue as usual.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had earlier said the government should impose a complete lockdown across the country for two weeks to stem the spread of the virus. Reacting to his comments, the prime minister said Pakistan cannot afford a complete lockdown, adding that the measure would adversely impact daily wage earners across the country.
He said, for the time being, the government will impose smart lockdowns across the country, adding that it was imperative to exercise even more caution during the third wave of the coronavirus.
