Laredo began Monday with big news in a pair of categories, falling out of two major negative spots it’s held for months.
The Laredo area fell out of first place in Texas in COVID-19 hospitalization rate as well as the top risk level for active cases in the community. These two pieces of news came on top of a third straight day of single-digit positives with nine announced along with three deaths, giving the area 42,498 positives and 774 deaths historically dating back to the emergence of the pandemic locally last March.
At the start of COVID-19 vaccine distribution in the border city of Laredo, Texas, data entry errors led to not providing accurate information regarding how many vaccines were actually given to residents.

As tens of thousands of Laredoans entered day three without electricity, and tens of thousands more with no water, it was not made clear when either of these essential services would be restored.
Tony Arce, manager of community affairs for American Electric Power, noted that on Wednesday morning, about 33,000 accounts across Laredo, Encinal, Zapata, Rio Bravo and El Cenizo were without power. By noon, around 2,000 of those accounts had been restored, and several thousand more a few hours later, Arce said. They hope to make more progress as more energy capacity comes online.

In the first weeks of COVID-19 vaccine distribution in Laredo, state vaccine data showed that of the 13,300 first doses that had been sent to Laredo, only about half had landed in people’s arms.
In reality all 13,300 doses had been administered, but some vaccine providers were having trouble inputting records into the state’s system, called ImmTrac2.
