Researchers from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom published their findings in the BMJ Sport & Exercise Medicine journal. They analyzed Medicare claims data from 1999-2008 and information from a National Institutes of Health-American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health study, including 21,750 respondents.

Having analyzed detailed questionnaires of more than 233,000 study participants between the ages of 50 and 71, research teams from several top universities and the National Cancer Institute concluded that “those who walked at the slowest pace had more than twofold increased risk of death from any cause, compared with those reporting the fastest walking pace.”
