Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, on Monday, announced that Maldives will receive the vaccine dozes provided under the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s COVAX programme mid-February and the 700,000 doses purchased from AstraZeneca’s Singaporean company in March.
Speaking to the press, following the commencement of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Maldives, the minister assured the public that there was no need to have any qualms about getting vaccinated.
He further guaranteed that the immunisation programme will be concluded after vaccinating the entire population, including locals and expatriates.

COLOMBO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) The Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA) has begun training healthcare workers on the distribution of vaccines against COVID-19, local media reported here Saturday.
About 290 healthcare workers were taught to raise awareness on the need for vaccinations and to monitor for potential side effects in vaccine recipients in an online training program carried out by the HPA in association with the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF).
The Maldives received its first shipment of vaccines on Jan. 20. The shipment included 100,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from India. A further 700,000 doses will be purchased to vaccinate the entire population.

Japan handed over medical equipment worth USD 6.5 million to the government of Maldives on Tuesday.
Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Keiko Yanai presented the equipment to Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem at a ceremony held at the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC).
According to the Embassy of Japan, the equipment includes 65 bedside monitors, 19 portable ultrasound machines, 19 defibrillators, 10 portable X-Ray machines, 132 syringe pumps and 132 syringe pump accessories.
The two countries signed the Exchange of Notes for the USD 5.6 million grant in June 2020, which aims to support the Maldivian government in improving health services in regional hospitals and across the atolls, as well as strengthen the COVID-19 response capacity.

Maldives will receive Covid-19 vaccination by the end of January.
A credible source told RaajjeMV that authorities are currently working to control the spread of Covid-19, under which a special priority has been given to acquiring vaccination for the pandemic, as soon as possible.
The source confirmed that Maldives will be able to access Covid-19 vaccination dosages by the end of the ongoing month.
The first batch of vaccination doses will be given to frontline workers of the health sector.
Maldives Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem had engaged in discussions with the World Health Organization on December 25 last year, in relation to acquiring Covid-19 vaccination.
