Drive south on the Bishop Ford Expressway to Altgeld Gardens and you ll pass plenty of reminders you re in a landscape not meant for inquisitive visitors. There are looming grain silos next to a parked shipping freighter, a village-scaled water reclamation plant, and plenty of anonymous warehouses. But once you pass 130th Street and drive into the Chicago Housing Authority s (CHA) largest surviving traditional public housing community, that spell breaks on approach to the new Altgeld Family Resource Cente

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said it best during an announcement Wednesday at the Altgeld Gardens/Murray Homes public housing development on the city’s Far South Side.
“This community unfortunately way too many times gets forgotten,” she said. “It’s physically isolated from other parts of Chicago. So it’s important to us to be very intentional about making sure Altgeld is not lost in the shuffle.”

Lightfoot visited the neighborhood to herald the opening of the $7.5 million Altgeld Family Resource Center, a new 14,000-square-foot multi-use building at 955 E. 131st St. The snazzy, new complex includes a Chicago Public Library branch, a community center and a daycare center.

The study showed air pollution contributes to more chronic health conditions, including asthma, in the west and south sides of the city. Following the UCâs announcement in January that it is planning for a return to in-person instruction next fall, UC Santa Barbara students and faculty have responded to the prospect of in-person instruction with feelings of both tentative hope and wariness.Â
Only a handful of classes have been held in person this academic year, but more professors are inching closer to holding in-person classes.
