Mighty Poplar, an all-star bluegrass ensemble, has been honored with a nomination for Best Bluegrass Album at this year's Grammy Awards. Comprising some of the most talented musicians in the genre, the group brings together Andrew Marlin of Watchhouse, Noam Pikelny and Chris Eldridge of Punch Brothers, Greg Garrison of Leftover Salmon, and Alex Hargreaves, known for his work with Billy Strings.
At its heart, bluegrass music is about what happens when you commit to the moment. The joy of improvisation keeps the music fresh, and the fun of crafting ideas on the fly keeps the musicians on their toes. This true spirit of bluegrass infuses the self-titled record from Mighty Poplar, a new all-star roots project featuring Andrew Marlin of Watchhouse, Noam Pikelny and Chris Eldridge of Punch Brothers, bassist Greg Garrison (Leftover Salmon) and fiddler Alex Hargreaves (Billy Strings) coming March 31, 2023 on Free Dirt Records.
You may have seen or heard of this Grammy-nominated bluegrass band from our “Goin’ Across the Mountain Live” concert last summer here in Spindale. They take on some of their favorites from the Stanley Brothers, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, George Jones and more on Never Slow Down. And they have a new member on this one, fiddler and singer Laura Orshaw.
We salute International Women s Day for 2022 by playing some of the pioneers and some of the later women involved in Bluegrass music. We could have used four hours this week and still only scratched the surface of the great music.
