It is understood police will be training in empty homes owned by Kāinga Ora, a Crown agency that provides rental homes for people in need. Housing Action Porirua co-ordinator Jasmine Taankink said even though empty houses were being used, those houses were still surrounded by other homes with people in them. “The training they re doing is when children are walking to and from a nearby school,” Taankink said.

The keys to 29 newly-built state homes are set to be handed over to tenants in Porirua, as part of Kāinga Ora’s Castor Cres development in Cannons Creek. Ngāti Toa Rangatira representatives formally blessed the homes on Monday morning, with Mana MP Barbara Edmonds saying their construction goes some way to addressing decades of “under-building” in the city.
