The road was shut by police after the assault at around 9.15am. A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: We were called to a report of an assault on Thames Avenue this morning at approximately 9.15am. One man was taken to Great Western Hospital but is being transferred to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with a life-threatening head injury. Our investigation is at a very early stage but the two men involved are understood to be known to each other and there is not believed to be any wider threat to the public. A cordon was set up on Thames Avenue while our enquiries were carried out. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Crews are dealing with a burst water main in Thames Avenue, the fire service said. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service urged people to avoid the area, as the burst main had flooded roads. Currently, crews from Stratton fire station are at the scene together with a fire officer. Firefighters were called out at 6.30am.
