A motive in the shooting has yet to be released, but Mellish, a Jamaican-born former standout high school athlete in New York City, claims he s innocent. Mellish s former attorney insisted his client was not guilty, but his arguments fell short with the judge and Mellish was ordered to remain in jail.
Nearly half a year later, Mellish s new attorney, Brian Kenney, has filed papers seeking his client s release, with arguments scheduled to take place in late August.
Although it is unclear what Kenney will argue, Mellish s former attorney claimed that not only was a weapon not found, but no forensic evidence has tied Mellish to the crime. The teen, who is also facing a murder charge, among others, gave a statement to police that Mellish s attorney said was less than credible.

Late runs proved to be the difference in a tight doubleheader split between Longwood baseball and Charleston Southern as the two teams wrapped up their conference-opening series on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, persistence paid off for Longwood (5-6, 1-2 Big South) as they rallied past the Buccaneers to win 10-8 thanks to six runs in the final three innings. Charleston Southern (2-4, 2-1 Big South) flipped the script in game two, however, plating four runs to Longwood’s three over the final three innings to take the game 6-5 and clinch the series.
