First Mass Vaccination Centre Opens in Kingston Menu First Mass Vaccination Centre Opens in Kingston The first dedicated vaccination centre for COVID-19 vaccines has been opened in Kingston, as the UK begins to unlock from the third lockdown of the coronavirus pandemic.  The Hawks Road Clinic in Norbiton, Kingston-upon-Thames, has been running under the NHS for decades to provide healthcare services (including optometry and contraception services) but has put these services on hold to distribute vaccines against the coronavirus for the borough. As with much of Greater London, Kingston-upon-Thames has been hard hit during the ‘third wave’ of coronavirus infections across the United Kingdom, reaching a peak of 802 cases per 100,000 people at any one time in January (according to Public Health England).

One of those is Kingston s Hawks Road site, with the other large centres including Hornsey Central Neighbourhood Health Centre at Crouch End, the Westfield Stratford City (an old Ikea and Dwell retail unit) and the Francis Crick Institute near Kings Cross. It will mean that more than 190 vaccination services will be operating across the capital by the end of the week, NHS England added. Dr Vin Diwakar, medical director for the NHS in London offered his praise of the health service s vaccination roll-out in the capital: It is testament to the tireless work of NHS staff across the capital that well over half a million vaccinations have already been given, providing safe, effective and well-tested protection against Covid-19 to Londoners in the vulnerable groups, he said.

Kingston s first large Covid-19 vaccination centre will open later this month as the borough attempts to ramp up community protection against the virus. Vaccinations are already being administered at Kingston Hospital and smaller surgeries in the borough but there is not yet a large, dedicated vaccination centre. That will change by the end of January 2021 Kingston Council (RBK) have confirmed as they announced the the Hawks Road NHS site in Norbiton will become the first centre of its size transformed into a place dedicated to giving vaccinations to borough residents who are offered the jab.  Dr Nazim Jivani, a GP and Clinical Lead for Kingston Borough, said NHS workers and volunteers had done an amazing job preparing for the mass vaccination in Kingston as he urged residents who received the call up for the vaccine to get the jab.
