January was established as the Island of Hawai‘i’s annual Volcano Awareness Month in 2010 as part of an effort to increase understanding of Hawaiian volcanoes among residents and visitors. Important eruption anniversaries in January include the start of Kīlauea’s long-lived Pu‘u‘ō‘ō eruption on the middle East Rift Zone (1983–2018) and the 1960 Kapoho eruption. Until 2018, these were the two most destructive recent eruptions of Kīlauea.
The “Best of the Best” of E Kūpaʻa Kākou Hawaiian music series, is set to be live-streamed at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. Some of the highlighted artists include Nā Wai ʻEhā, Amy Hanaialiʻi Gilliom and Kalani Peʻa.
Of today’s 72 cases, there were 60 cases identified as confirmed, and +12 probable cases were added to the count. The confirmed cases included: 44 on O‘ahu (+7 probable); four on Hawai‘i Island (+4 probable); seven on Maui (+1 probable); five on Kaua‘i; and four Hawai‘i residents diagnosed while out of state.
Due to hazardous conditions and impassable roads and trails caused by this week’s heavy rains and strong winds, DLNR has closed the Kula State Forest Reserve, Kahikinui State Forest Reserve – Papa’anui Tract, and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area.
