Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a prominent religious leader in the North, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, have recommended special courts to try bandits and kidnappers promptly.
Both Obasanjo and Gumi stated this in a jointly signed communiqué issued after a closed-door meeting at the Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, on Sunday.
Gumi, who led some northern religious leaders to Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, arrived around 11am and left at 4pm.
He declined to speak to newsmen when asked the reason for his visit.
But in a 21-point communiqué jointly issued by Obasanjo and Gumi, they urged the Federal Government to take the issue of insecurity up within the Economic Community of West African States.
IGP Mohammed Adamu being decorated by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2019.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation(AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami have argued the President was empowered by the Constitution to retain Mohammed Adamu as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as long as it suits him.
They equally argued that the President is allowed by the Constitution to extend the IGP’s tenure as he wishes.
Their position is contained in the joint response they filed to a suit instituted by a lawyer, Maxwell Opara, challenging, among others, the President’s decision to extend Adamu’s stay as the IGP for another three months from February 1, 2021 when he ordinarily ought to retire.
AsarI Dokubo
Kinsmen of the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, elders and youths from the Niger Delta have distanced themselves from the declaration of Biafra by ex-agitator Alhaji Asari Dokubo.
The kinsmen of Wike under the auspices of the Ikwerre Peoples Congress (IPC) said Asari’s proclamation was an abuse of his fundamental human rights, describing his inclusion of Ikwere and the Niger Delta as part of Biafra as vexatious.
The convener, IPC, Livingstone Wechie, said: “For the records, Ikwerre is an independent ethnic nation in Nigeria with a global spread and Ikwerre are not subservient to any other ethnic block whatsoever and under any guise. This is in respecting the status of Ikwerre as one of the largest ethnic nationalities in Nigeria on record undisputed.
