Through the middle part of last decade, the linebacking corps was a major team weakness on a struggling New Orleans Saints defense. Gone were players like Jonathan Vilma, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Scott Fujita, and Scott Shanle that helped fuel three playoff runs and a Super Bowl title between 2009 and 2011.
In their place were draft busts like Stephone Anthony and Hau oli Kikaha and disappointing free agent pickups like Curtis Lofton or James Laurinaitis. The New Orleans linebackers were athletically and strategically overmatched, leading to consistent defensive breakdowns.

Andrus Peat and P.J. Williams are the only members of the 2015 draft class that still remain on the New Orleans Saints roster. In 2020, Peat earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod. He started in his 75th career game for an offense that rushed for over 200 yards for the second consecutive week at Atlanta on Dec. 6 and notched 13 starts in the campaign but was forced to miss three regular-season games due to injury. Williams played in 12 games with four starts, recording 14 tackles, two interceptions and four passes defensed, picking off his first pass in his second Saints stint on October 4 at Detroit, when he filled in for an injured Janoris Jenkins and Marshon Lattimore.

With the hire of Montana State head coach Jeff Choate as inside linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisianâs staff is now complete. There are some helpful breadcrumbs in some of the title designations and known pay scales to deduce how this staff is going to work together and what the philosophy and approach will be on defense.
Choate has worked with Pete Kwiatkowski in the past, both at Boise State working with the linebackers and then at Washington helping with the defensive line and special teams. The timing of his hire, coming off the heels of Mike Stoops reports and then a resounding backlash to those reports, suggests Choate is Peteâs guy.
