region. really, a far cry from what has taken place in north carolina as the outer rain bands spun up tornadoes. we know over two dozen have been reported and that has caused quite a bit of damage across that area as well. so spared a direct hit here in charleston. we think of what is taking place with land falling hurricane in north carolina. so glad you re there. thank you so much for that. stay safe. thank you. the big question, of course, is where is dorian headed next? meteorologist allison chinchara standing by live. we have the 5 a.m. update from the national hurricane center. any changes? not really. nothing major. one of the things we were waiting to see is whether it would have landfall. it s still headed up towards hatteras, meaning the center of
over hatteras. this could potentially be our landfall point for hurricane dorian. any shifts in that track, if it continues to move a little bit farther to east we may miss a landfall entirely just getting some of those strong winds out here. notice even other places. portions of connecticut, portions of massachusetts, even main likely going to get some rainfall from this storm albeit they will be a very long distance away. they won t get the same impacts of the carolinas, florida and georgia did. areas in both north and south carolina picking up over ten inches of rain, dave. for some places we re going to see those numbers going up. still a lot to come. allison, thanks so much. one of the cities on that list charleston is where cnn meteorologist derek van dam is live for us this morning. what s the situation in the carolinas, derek? reporter: yeah, good morning, christine. this is a city that is breathing a sigh of relief because they
where d it headed? cape hath has as we speak. it is still possible coming within only a few small miles, less than ten mails really from around the morehead city area. but not a technical landfall there. it s still moving to the northeast at 14 miles per hour. 90 mile-per-hour sustained winds with gusts over 100 miles per hour. the heaviest rain is just south of hatteras, but that s where they re getting pummelled by the heavy rain bands. tornadoes also possible as some of those outer bands continue to push on shore. flash flood warnings and flood watches are still in effect here for numerous states. because everyone states like maryland and delaware are going to be impacted by heavy rain. even though they won t get quite the winds the other states had been getting. both north and south carolina have some areas that have reported over 10 inches of rain. wilmington picked up over 9 inches yesterday. again, here is a look at the
for the damage. you look at this radar image, this is the eye. a good portion of the band is over land. the rest of it is here heading out towards hatteras. they re get the hardest rain and winds in the next hour. about an hour and a half, two hours, that will arrive in hatteras. it may be a landfall or not. it will quickly move off shore. the biggest concern for life and profit right now is the rain. we are mostly focused only in extreme eastern north carolina. we ve taken away the flood watches. all the way up to norfolk and virginia beach. all these maroon counties.
