UR, IRAQ Invoking the shared origins of Christians, Muslims and Jews steps from the Ziggurat ruins of the ancient city that the Prophet Abraham once called home, Pope Francis March 6 called on Iraq s religious leaders to help the country heal and rebuild following decades of violence.
In a potent address only about a month after the country s capital suffered its first suicide bombing in two years, the pontiff urged faith leaders to affirm that violence and extremism are betrayals of religion and that hatred of others is the greatest blasphemy.

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Speaking on Saturday (March 6) before the monumental remains of Ur, the once-great city where Muslims, Jews and Christians believe their common spiritual forefather Abraham first heard the voice of God, Pope Francis condemned religious hatred and mapped a path to peaceful coexistence among different faiths.

Brothers and sisters! Who are evil and misguided scholars? Here is a rule by Imam Ash-Shatibi who said:
“Evil and misguided scholars are those who are dangerous to mankind. They are a disease to mankind, and they are those who do not act on their knowledge.”
In his book
Al-Fawa’id, Ibnul Qayyim gave a parable. He said:
“Evil and misguided scholars are like people sitting on the gates of Paradise (Jannah) and calling people to come on in. With their tongues they are saying come on in, come on in, but their actions are saying do not come in. The more they talk to people and tell people to come in, the more their actions say do not listen to us, because if we were indeed truthful then we would have been the first to apply it…”
