A day after being sworn in, President Joe Biden is rolling out a national strategy to fight COVID-19, reopen the nation’s schools and restart the U.S. economy. His plan calls for an expansion of coronavirus testing, accelerated vaccine distribution and new action to prepare for future biological threats. The plan is tied to a $1.9 trillion plan that Biden unveiled last week to combat the pandemic.
NIH Researcher’s Pioneering Work Led to Discovery of Hepatitis C

NIH’s Dr. Harvey Alter won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his life-saving discoveries about hepatitis C.
When the phone rang at 4:15 in the morning, IRP senior scientist Harvey J. Alter, M.D., was annoyed. He didn’t answer it. After the third try, he reluctantly got out of bed and took his phone out to the hallway.
“Before I could yell at the person, he said, ‘This is Stockholm calling,’” Dr. Alter recalls. “And then I got stopped in my tracks. Then the moment of disbelief and awe comes over you.”
STOCKHOLM, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) For the first time in history, the Nobel Prize award ceremony was streamed online on Thursday from Stockholm s City Hall due to the coronavirus pandemic. This years laureates are: Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez (physics); Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna (chemistry); Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice (physiology or medicine); Louise Gluck (literature); and Paul R. Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson (economics). The winners received their awards at their homes. In his address, Carl-Henrik Heldin, chairman of the Board of the Nobel Foundation, said: It is gratifying that, during a year when humanity is being subjected to such major hardships, new Nobel Laureates could be announced this October. And we are glad that we have been able to bring the Nobel Prize medals and diplomas to you Nobel Laureates, in your home countries, when it is not possible for you to come to us in Stockholm.
