Nigeria Loses $1bn Annually to Aflatoxin, Stakeholders Seek Awareness

James Emejo in Abuja Stakeholders have called on the government to boost awareness on the dangers associated with the consumption of aflatoxin contaminated food which cost the country about $1 billion annually. Rising from a one-day workshop on ‘Scaling Aflatoxin Solution in Nigeria’s Crop Value Chain,’ in Abuja, which was organised by Harvestfield Industries Limited and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), participants urged the federal government to establish legislations that would ensure that farmers use Aflasafe agro chemicals that would prevent Nigerians from consuming aflatoxin contaminated foods which usually resulted in diseases such as liver cancer, stunted growth among other diseases.

Farmers advised to fight aflatoxin in maize, groundnut

It infects crops from flowering until maturity. Maize and groundnut are particularly susceptible. One cannot see, smell or taste aflatoxin, yet both people and animals are very sensitive to it. While acute exposure to aflatoxins can kill, prolonged exposure leads to impeded growth, liver disease, immune suppression and cancer, with women, children and the poor most vulnerable. Few years ago, makers of animal feeds and other household consumables complained that the Nigerian maize and other oil seeds like groundnut were highly infected with aflatoxins, which forced many poultry farmers and feed millers to clamour for importation. On Tuesday, stakeholders met at a workshop organised by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and  Harvestfield Industries Limited to discuss the  results of aflatoxin levels test in maize sampled nationwide under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (CBN-ABP) 2020 wet season project.

The federal government gives companies in critical sectors of the economy tax holiday, also known as the Pioneer Status Incentive, to encourage and attract investment into sectors that could significantly impact development and deliver key benefits to the country. The incentive, provided under the Industrial Development Income Tax Relief Act, is essentially a tax holiday that grants benefitting firms relief from the payment of corporate income tax for an initial period of three years, extendable for one or two additional years.
