Yet another winter storm, crippling the east coast. And today, well the south got the worst of it. More than 350,000 homes and businesses now without power from texas to the carolinas. Businesses and schools have been closed for days as roads and trees are covered by sleet, snow, freezing rain and an inch of ice. Forecasters say there wont be any relief for this region until at least tomorrow but the power outages, well, they could continue for days. The ice isnt just in the south. Take a look at these pictures of the great lakes. Look at this. Lake superior is now almost 87 frozen. Typically just 30 of the worlds biggest freshwater lake freezes over. The record is nearly 95 , which is what happened in 1979. So we could be on track for another winter event for the record books. Look at that. Are taking the storm seriously in san anselmo. This is january 2005 when an intense storm caused flooding and devastated businesses. The california Highway Patrol is also gearing up for heavy rains. The first three days of the storm will be extremely hazardous because rain brings oil to the surface. It will be slick, so drive slowly. The san anselmo creek, which runs through town, floods at 13 feet. According to the ross valley Fire Departments website, which tracks creek levels, its only at just over 2 feet now. Now the level is about 2 feet but you can bet that people will be keeping a very close eye on those levels as the series of storms roll in. Lets head to cate caugiran with more storm coverage. High strong winds are here at the Richmond San Rafael bridge. The National Weather service says wind will pick up to 45 to gust of 65 miles an hour. The combination of wind and rain is dangerous especially with the cars on the road and officers say its best to drive slowly like youre in fog and ice. Army twostar Major General was killed today apparently when a member of the Afghan Armed Forces turned his weapon on a visiting high ranking delegation at a military base there. Major general harold green was an engineer by trade. A soldier and a scholar, with three masters degrees and a ph. D. After numerous domestic postings in the army, he was second highest ranking u. S. Military officer, presently posted in afghanistan. He becomes now the highest ranking officer killed in an overseas combat zone since the vietnam war. This incident happened just northwest of the city of kabul. Tonight we begin at the pentagon with our correspondent jim miklaszewski. Reporter Major General harold green, a 34year veteran, arrived in afghanistan for the first time this past january. His mission was to train and develop Afghan Military forces. It was one of those Afghan Soldiers who shot and killed general green today.
