While the community voted overwhelmingly in favor of the recent non-homestead millage renewal for Hartland Consolidated Schools, the organizer of a pro-millage group says it came at a personal cost.
Hartland students, alumni hold rally against racism during Board of Education meeting
One week after 18-year-old Tatayana Vanderlaan posted on social media about being harassed by classmates because she is Black, a group of students and alumni gathered outside a Board of Education meeting on Monday to support her.
The Hartland senior posted on her Facebook page March 1 saying she has been harassed by her fellow students. The post says students have called her the N-word and have made fun of her hair and appearance.
The next day, Hartland Consolidated Schools Superintendent Chuck Hughes wrote a letter to the school community announcing that the school district was launching an investigation into the allegations.
