After almost 50 years, a United States district judge in Bridgeport has ended federal oversight into the 1973 decent decree for the Hartford Police Department.
In a letter to Members of the Court of Common Council about the Dooley ruling, Mayor Luke Bronin said that her decision in dissolving the consent decree emphasized the significant work that the city has done, the progress that the city has made and she found the claims made by the plaintiffs in their most recent motion were without merit.
“The MDC is simply not capable of policing itself, and additional oversight is necessary,” Cantor wrote. “This is why I am not only calling for Chairman DiBella to step down, but also for the General Assembly to adopt several common-sense reforms for the MDC.”
Hartford City Council members recently voted to continue extending a resolution that ensures the city is upholding its commitment to increase the demographics of the Hartford Police Department to reflect those of the city.
